About

Shadows-on-the-Teche, located in New Iberia’s Historic Main Street District, is a National Trust for Historic Preservation site rich in history. Built by wealthy sugar planters Mary and David Weeks, the house remained in their family for four generations (1834-1958). As a former plantation home, its history is intertwined with the lives of the hundreds of enslaved men, women, and children who lived and worked there. The Shadows dialogic tour explores their experiences, the history of enslaved labor and freedom, the Weeks family’s life before and after the Civil War, and the contributions of gay artists and authors who worked to preserve the legacy of both the Weeks family and the stories of enslaved and freed people in Iberia Parish and Louisiana.
